Obesity in Qatar: A Growing Health Crisis and Ways to Combat It

article
Obesity is considered one of the most pressing health challenges in Qatar. Recent reports have shown that around 54% of the country’s population suffers from overweight or obesity. This increase is attributed to several factors related to lifestyle and dietary habits. Causes of Obesity in Qatar The spread of obesity in Qatar is closely linked to the adoption of an unhealthy lifestyle, which includes reliance on fast and processed foods rich in calories, and a lack of physical activity due to dependence on cars for transportation and low levels of exercise. Additionally, stress and emotional eating contribute to increased consumption of high-calorie foods, heightening the risk of obesity—especially among individuals with a genetic predisposition. Health Risks Associated with Obesity Obesity significantly raises the risk of developing many chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases. It accounts for 65–78% of hypertension cases, and obese individuals are two to three times more likely to suffer from heart disease and strokes. Furthermore, obesity increases the risk of type 2 diabetes, fatty liver disease, and metabolic syndrome. Obesity also puts excessive pressure on joints, increasing the likelihood of osteoarthritis and joint pain. Those affected by obesity also experience higher rates of depression, anxiety, and social isolation, which negatively impact overall health and quality of life. Strategies to Combat Obesity To address this issue, it is recommended to adopt a healthy diet that includes balanced meals rich in vegetables, fruits, and healthy proteins, and to drink 8–10 cups of water daily to support metabolism. Reducing the intake of sugar and salt in line with World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines is also advised. In addition, regular exercise is key—at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity, along with incorporating muscle-strengthening exercises. Avoiding prolonged sitting and increasing daily movement are also beneficial. Improving sleep quality is another important part of the strategy: getting 7–9 hours of sleep per night, avoiding caffeine and screens before bed, and maintaining consistent sleep and wake times. Stress management through techniques like relaxation, meditation, and yoga can help reduce stress levels and prevent emotional eating triggered by negative emotions. Finally, regular monitoring, including frequent weight checks, is encouraged to track progress, and consulting nutrition and health professionals can provide personalized guidance. The Role of Society and Health Authorities Tackling obesity requires a comprehensive effort involving individuals, communities, and health institutions. A culture of healthy living should be promoted through awareness campaigns, proper nutritional planning, and increased access to physical activity opportunities. Health authorities must provide support and guidance, as well as implement programs and initiatives that encourage healthy lifestyle adoption. Conclusion Obesity is a major health challenge in Qatar that demands collective action to curb its spread and mitigate its adverse effects on public health.
