What Causes Limb Numbness?

article
Limb numbness is among the common health complaints. Sometimes, it is caused by poor sitting posture, while at other times it may signal a serious health problem such as circulatory disorders. Simple Causes German neurologist Prof. Claudia Sommer explained that limb numbness has many causes, some simple and some serious. Simple causes include uncomfortable sleeping positions or sitting cross-legged for a long time. Limb numbness is also common among older adults, typically around the age of 50, because connective tissue becomes less firm with age. In cases of simple causes, numbness can be relieved through movement and stretching the limbs. Circulatory Disorders Vascular surgeon Prof. Alexander Oberhuber noted that persistent limb numbness may indicate a serious health issue such as circulatory disorders, which occur due to blood clots or arterial calcification. In such cases, muscles do not receive enough blood flow, and nerves may gradually become damaged. The risk of serious circulatory disorders can be reduced by adopting a healthy lifestyle based on proper nutrition—especially limiting the intake of red meat and focusing on a Mediterranean-style diet rich in legumes, vegetables, fruits, and nuts. Additionally, quitting smoking and maintaining regular physical activity help lower risk. Herniated Disc Limb numbness may also indicate a herniated disc, which occurs when disc tissue presses on the nerves. If the cervical vertebrae are affected, numbness appears in the hands and/or fingers. If the lumbar vertebrae are affected, sensory disturbances appear in the buttocks and/or legs. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Numbness in the limbs may also be due to carpal tunnel syndrome, which often results from excessive strain on the wrist—for example, from computer work. Prof. Sommer explained that the median nerve passes through the carpal tunnel, the passage between the hand and the forearm. If there is not enough space, nerve signals cannot properly reach the hand. The thumb, index, and middle fingers in particular often experience tingling, numbness, or pain. Ulnar Nerve Palsy Prof. Oberhuber added that the causes of limb numbness also include ulnar nerve palsy, also known as “cyclist's palsy,” which especially affects cyclists. Holding the bike handlebars in a certain position can press on the ulnar nerve in the arm, potentially causing long-term damage. The ring and little fingers are particularly affected. Proper handlebar adjustment, regular breaks, and wearing well-padded gloves can help prevent this condition.
